Q. What does ZESPRI mean?

A. ZESPRI® is a brand, like Sunkist and Dole. It represents the energy and vitality found in New Zealand Kiwifruit. ZESPRI International is owned by the over 2,500 kiwifruit growers of New Zealand, and we sell about 100 million trays of GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit each year. Kiwifruit is a huge part of the New Zealand economy and ZESPRI growers are committed to sending only the best fruit to North America. If you want assurance of the highest quality, look for the ZESPRI® label and request it from your retailer.

Q. What is GOLD Kiwifruit?

A. A new tropical-sweet kiwifruit variety, developed naturally by ZESPRI International. At first glance, it might look similar to GREEN Kiwifruit, so just look for the ZESPRI® GOLD label. GOLD Kiwifruit is the result of 100% natural cross breeding of different kiwifruit varieties, and it’s available June through October

Q. What are the main differences between GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit?

A. The biggest difference is taste. While GREEN Kiwifruit has a tangier, more tart flavor, GOLD Kiwifruit is mellow and tropical, a mixture of mango, melon and citrus flavors. People who find GREEN Kiwifruit too tart usually love GOLD. As for other differences, the color is GOLD, instead of GREEN, and it is tear-drop shaped, with a smooth skin and a crown on the top. Finally, while you might need to wait a few days for GREEN to ripen, GOLD Kiwifruit is always ready to eat.

Q. Does ZESPRI also sell organic kiwifruit?

A. Yes, in addition to conventionally grown GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit, ZESPRI sells organic GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit. If it’s not available at your local retailer, you should be able to find it at a market that focuses on organic and natural products.

Q. What’s the easiest way to eat a kiwifruit?

A. Eating a kiwifruit is super easy! Just cut in half and scoop out the fruit with a spoon.

Q. What are the nutritional attributes of kiwifruit?

A. A Rutgers University study has shown that kiwifruit is the most nutrient dense of 27 popular fruits. That means that, bite for bite, you get more nutrition with kiwifruit than just about any other fruit. Just one serving of 2 kiwifruit has more vitamin C than 2 oranges, more potassium than a banana, and all the fiber found in a bowl of bran flakes. ZESPRI® Kiwifruit was also named as a SuperFood in Dr. Steven Pratt’s NY Times bestseller, SuperFoods HealthStyle. For more specific nutrition information, click here.

Q. What about GREEN versus GOLD? Are the health benefits different?

A. Both are packed with nutrition, and relatively similar in what they offer you. The difference is just a distinction between “great” and “really great.” For example, one serving of GOLD has over 300% of the RDA of Vitamin C, but GREEN still has over 200%. Both are excellent sources of this vitamin that is so essential in keeping you healthy and full of energy.

Q. How do I know when a kiwifruit is ripe?

A. Generally, speaking, when a kiwifruit yields to slight pressure, like a peach, it is ready to eat. GOLD Kiwifruit are ready to eat when you purchase them so, after you bring them home, just put them in the refrigerator.

Remember, if you don’t want the kiwifruit to ripen further, put it in your refrigerator. You should be able to store it for 1–2 weeks.

Q. Do GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit cost the same?

A. Prices will vary from retailer to retailer, but GOLD is usually a bit more expensive (maybe $0.10 more per piece) than GREEN. The price is higher because it costs more to produce and harvest GOLD Kiwifruit.

Q. Can I cook with kiwifruit?

A. You can but, since the flesh is so soft, add it to the last minute or two of a stir-fry. Both GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit make really refreshing summer drinks and salads. One of our favorite recipes is a GOLD kiwifruit smoothie. Just blend 2 GOLD kiwifruit, one banana, a half cup orange juice and a half-cup yogurt in a blender. It makes a yummy and nutritious summer drink. Also, there is an enzyme in the GREEN Kiwifruit that acts as a meat tenderizer. Simply slice or mash up a GREEN Kiwifruit and place it on your meat before you cook it!
